A well-known Christchurch businessman has indicated he will defend two firearms charges he is facing after a New Year's Day incident near Kaiapoi, north of Christchurch.

The man was given continued name suppression after being remanded by Rangiora District Court today for a pre-hearing conference on February 23.

The man was arrested on charges of illegal possession of two firearms after an armed call-out by police to an address near Kaiapoi.

Gunshots had been reported but no-one was injured.
