A man was run down by a car whose occupants then robbed him of his backpack and wallet in central Hamilton last night.

Police said they were stunned no-one tried to help the man who was left lying dazed on the roadside after what was believed to be a premeditated attack.

Detective Senior Sergeant Karl Thornton of Hamilton CIB said the 21-year-old man was walking home across Anglesea St about 11pm when he was hit by a vehicle, just south of the Caro St intersection.

The occupants of the vehicle, believed to be two men and a woman, then demanded the man's wallet and took his dark green backpack which was thrown a short distance away in the impact.

The man managed to phone 111 on his cellphone.

He was treated for moderate injuries and taken to hospital.

Mr Thornton said it was concerning the man's cries for help went unanswered by passing motorists.

Initial inquiries indicated the vehicle was seen veering towards the victim before he was hit.

Mr Thornton said that following last night's international cricket match at nearby Seddon Park the area was busier than normal as people made their way home and he appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Anyone with information can phone Hamilton police on 07 858 6200 or 0800 555 111.
