Five charges of assault using a car as a weapon have been laid against a man arrested after a domestic-violence incident in Hills Road, Christchurch, on Saturday night.

They were among 18 charges Cody Derek Martin faced during a brief appearance in Christchurch District Court today.

Police said the 23-year-old labourer broke into an ambulance where the alleged victim of the domestic assault was being treated.

He then rammed a police car which had pursued him reversing into into it several times.

On the last occasion, Martin's car allegedly became entangled with the patrol car and he ran off.

When police chased him, he threatened to kill them with a baseball bat.

Judge Jane McMeeken remanded Martin in custody to March 17.
