Police are seeking information after a woman was woken by an intruder and raped in her New Plymouth home yesterday morning.

The woman had been asleep on her own when she awoke to find the intruder in the bedroom of her home in the suburb of Marfell sometime between 3am and 5am, Detective Sergeant Debbie Gower of New Plymouth police said.

She received minor scratches and bruises during the attack.

It was not yet know how the offender entered or left the woman's house.

She was receiving support from family members, Ms Gower said.

Police have carried out a scene examination and items were taken for further examination.

They have asked anyone who was in the Cook St and Omata Rd area at the time of the attack to contact them.
