Spikes used to halt ammunition-loaded truck
A man found with more than 220 rounds of ammunition and five guns in his ute, allegedly tried to out run police when he was stopped at a checkpoint today.
The 38-year-old man, from Cambridge, was stopped around 1.30pm at Arapuni in south Waikato.
As he was being spoken to by police, they spotted three firearms and ammunition lying loose in the cab, a police statement said.
He sped off heading east on Arapuni Rd towards Putaruru and failed to stop. Police eventually used road spikes to deflate his tyres.
A total of five firearms were found in the vehicle, one of which was loaded with 11 rounds of ammunition. A total of 222 rounds of ammunition was found, the statement said.
The man was arrested and charged with unlawfully possession firearms and ammunition, as well as reckless driving and failing to stop for police.
He will appearing in the Tokoroa District Court next week.
