A Mid-Canterbury cystic fibrosis sufferer has put new career plans on hold after his car and painting equipment were stolen a day after he left Christchurch Hospital.

Doyle Haydon-Gliddon, of Mayfield, near Ashburton, found his prized Nissan Skyline had been stolen while he was visiting his brother in the city suburb of St Albans on Sunday.

The 21-year-old had just been discharged after four weeks in Christchurch Hospital with a chest infection.

"We're were gone for maybe an hour, and we got back and the car was gone," he said.

"It's like a kick in the guts because I've been working on that car for so long."

The car was covered only by third-party insurance.

Haydon-Gliddon said the "big sting" was also losing spray equipment worth $1000 that he bought to train as a car painter.

He was enrolled in a six- month course at the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology, but was forced to pullout because of ill-health.

"It got to the point I was going to hospital that much I was going to miss out on too much work," he said. "I wasn't going to be able to do it, so I was looking at another alternative."

A friend with a panel and paint shop in Ashburton agreed to train him once he bought his own equipment.

Haydon-Gliddon said the new spray gear was still in its box when it was stolen, and the theft was a "major setback".

"I can't get really get a qualification for a trade under my belt," he said.

"At the times I do feel well, I can work. I just need the certificates."

It would take some time to replace the equipment, he said.

"I still want to do [automotive painting]. I just don't think it will happen for a while now," he said.

The poor guy probably can't afford more than 3rd party, he doesn't have a job, and now it's going to be even harder for him. I hope whoever stole his stuff feels like a right loser, cos they are.

"pull out" - phrasal verb, but still two words, not 'pullout'. Awful situation, just awful. I'd suggest that reading this article may inspire the guilty party to reconsider their new found wealth and return everything, yet I doubt they could give a toss.

Sorry to hear mate. As the owner of a prized Skyline myself, I am constantly aware of its desirability to thieves, despite having a 5-star alarm and immobiliser, as well as GPS tracking and full insurance. You can't afford to have any less than this sort of setup with one of these cars, especially if you've done a lot of work on it.

The point is, is that this shouldnt be happening at all. We should be able to leave items in our cars without having to worry about it being stolen, let alone our cars being stolen - its our right isn't it? Yet, it is our fault for tempting these people to steal the items that we have worked so hard for? Our law is ridiculous

1. Don't store valuables in your car. 2. Get more than third party insurance.

Wow this sucks, some people are so low (not that its news these days, which we should ALL be ashamed of).

I guess this points out the importance of insurance - I don't know anyone who has managed to hang on to a Skyline without someone nicking it or crashing into it and making it a write-off because they can't have it themselves.

I'm sure this chap will get his head above water though - you keep working at it mate, you will get there.
