A Christchurch mother is scared to bring her new baby home after her house was burgled as she gave birth.
Wainoni couple Gwen Evans, 20, and Aaron Clark, 26, had their first child, Elizabeth, on Monday.
While Evans was giving birth in Christchurch Women's Hospital, the couple's home was burgled, leaving the pair devastated.
"I don't want to take her home. I don't feel safe going home," said Evans, who moved to Christchurch from Wales two years ago.
The thieves took a widescreen TV, a $5000 surround-sound system, and a PlayStation 3.
Clark, who spent Monday at the hospital, said when he returned home at 10pm, he saw that the back door was open.
"I knew straight away," he said.
"They knew what they wanted. It was as if they somehow knew we were out of the house from 7am."
The only positive was that their new baby gear was untouched.
