A South Auckland baby, who was admitted to Starship hospital on Friday with severe head injuries, has died.
Six-month-old Cezar Taylor died about 7pm last night, the hospital said.
Detective Senior Sergeant Richard Wilkie said yesterday that Cezar's injuries were consistent with "shaking and blunt force trauma, which is a blow to the head" and appeared to have happened over a period of time.
James Allan Hemana, 30, was yesterday charged with assaulting Cezar. Hemana, who is Cezar's mother's partner, was remanded in custody after a court appearance yesterday.
He also faced two charges of failing to appear in Whangarei District Court on an unrelated matter.
Hemana, who did not enter a plea, was remanded in custody to reappear at Manukau District Court on July 30. The remand is for him to seek a lawyer.
Hemana, also known as James Sylva, was found at a house in Te Awamutu, in Waikato early yesterday.
Cezar, the son of Hemana's partner, was admitted to Auckland's Starship Hospital with severe head injuries on Friday morning after an incident at his home in Mangere East.
Detective Wilkie yesterday said three women at the house where Hemana was found were being spoken to by police and could face charges.
