Police are speaking to the driver of a car believed to have struck and killed a man during a street brawl in Auckland early today.
The incident occurred about 1.30am on Gifford Rd, Papatoetoe, after a fight involving up to 20 people spilled into the roadway.
A car then drove through the group hitting a 19-year-old man. Witnesses and emergency services personnel tried to resuscitate him but he died at the scene.
Inspector Matt Rogers of the police northern communications centre said police were speaking to several people who were at the scene.
``We are speaking to the person who is understood to be the driver of the vehicle,'' he said.
Police were also examining the car believed to have struck the man.
There was still a high police presence at the scene late this morning.
The street remained cordoned off and the body of the victim appeared to still be at the scene.
