The puppy thrown through a basketball hoop by a gang of boys is being adopted by the police officer who saved him.
Four 12 and 13-year-old boys were caught beating and kicking the eight- week-old black labrador-cross in Papakura, Auckland – and using him as a basketball.
SPCA chief inspector Vicki Border said there had been numerous offers to adopt the puppy – given the name Floyd – but it was decided he will go to Sergeant Dave Readings, who was the first police officer to respond to calls by neighbours about the incident.
"I think that's an awesome ending for the dog," she said. "It is a very nice little dog, though it is still a little wary, which is understandable."
Floyd was bruised but improving every day. He would be kept at the SPCA for two more weeks while he is monitored for internal injuries.
The boys would not be charged because of their age but have been referred to the Police Youth Aid section.
Ms Border hoped the family conference process would get through to them. "I think education is vital [but] there are just some young people you can't break through to.
"With these young guys, they are at the age where they know right from wrong."
Ms Border said research in the United States had shown that youths who abused animals had a greater chance of being violent in later life.
