A Nelson man threatening his neighbour with a gun sparked an armed police operation on the city's port hills.

The Brittania Heights area around Albert Rd and Poynters Cres was closed off.

Police said a Poynters Cres resident had threatened his neighbour with a shotgun.

Police took a man into custody at 11.10am and searched a property.
