Three youths are in custody after leading police on a high-speed chase from the Auckland suburb of Epsom to west Auckland early today.

The chase began after the trio in a late model Mercedes car ignored a request from police to stop in Epsom shortly after 4am.

Inspector Matt Sillars from the police Northern Communications Centre said during the pursuit the speed reached 170kmh.

The car finally stopped, undamaged, at Massey and the three occupants fled but were caught soon after.

Mr Sillars said it was "mummy's car" and not stolen.

He said it was too soon to say what charges would be laid or if drugs or alcohol were involved.
