Real estate agent kidnapping accused in court
A man has appeared in Masterton District Court, accused of kidnapping and assaulting a Wairarapa real estate agent at the weekend.
Nigel Whakarau, 38, of Wellington, was remanded in custody until August 18 on charges of kidnapping, aggravated robbery, burglary and assault with a weapon.
Police said the real estate agent, a woman, was kidnapped and tied up by a man during a private viewing of a Carterton house on Saturday.
As her attacker attempted to bundle her into the boot of his car, she managed to grab a screwdriver and stab him in the head.
She then locked herself inside the house, calling police after the man fled in his car.
