The son of the mayor of a small Northland district has been found guilty of three charges of sexual abuse of two girls under 16.

Bevan Tiller, 37, son of Kaipara mayor Neil Tiller, was found guilty by a jury in Whangarei District Court last night of two counts of unlawful sexual connection with a girl aged 12-16 years and one charge of sexual contact with a young person under the age of 16.

The jury was unable to reach a verdict on a fourth charge, of rape.

Speaking outside court, Dargaville Detective Sergeant Jonathan Tier said the Crown would decide whether or not to seek a retrial on the rape charge.

Tier said the maximum penalty for unlawful sexual connection was the same as for a rape charge.

Bevan Tiller will be sentenced in Whangarei District Court on June 22.
