Two friends have been sentenced to jail for their part in a violent, premeditated group assault and kidnapping after a Queenstown drug deal went awry.

Michael Philip Coulter, 25, and Brodie O'Rourke, 24, appeared before Judge Kevin Phillips for sentence in the Queenstown District Court this morning.

The pair previously plead guilty to unlawfully detaining Jason Maynard without consent and with intent to cause him to be confined and with intent to commit a crime, namely theft, rendering Maynard incapable of resistance on November 26.

O'Rourke was sentenced to three years and six months' jail and Coulter was sentenced to three years' jail.
Both men were ordered to pay $3000 each to the victim.

Friends and families of both prisoners packed the district court for the 90-minute sentencing.
