A 64-year-old man has been charged with murder after a woman's body was found near a driveway in Tauranga today.
Police were called to a house in Bell St, Judea after a member of the public reported a dispute between a man and a woman.
When police arrived they found a woman's body lying by the driveway. She had reportedly been stabbed, although police will not confirm this.
Police spokeswoman Kim Perks said the scene had been cordoned off and would be preserved overnight for a detailed examination tomorrow. An area canvass is underway and police are speaking to witnesses.
"Police believe they know who the woman is but need to formally identify her and notify next of kin. No further details about her will be released until that process has been completed.''
Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner said the investigation was still in the very early stages. Police had not yet contacted the woman's next of kin, so her identity has not been released.
An autopsy will be held to determine the cause of death.
The man will appear in the Tauranga District Court tomorrow.
Anyone with information relevant to this investigation is asked to contact Tauranga Police on 07 577 4300. Alternatively information can be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
