'Houdini' makes court appearance
An inmate nicknamed Houdini for his ability to escape prison appeared in court today.
Aaron Stephen Forden, 30, appeared in the Auckland District Court where a sentencing date was set for him on multiple charges including escaping lawful custody in Whangarei in June 2011.
Other charges include, breaching special release conditions, driving while disqualified, and failing to stop at the scene of an accident dating back to January 2011.
The 30-year-old was remanded in custody and will re-appear in the court on September 12.
Forden gained the nickname "Houdini" after escaping from both police and Corrections custody on several occasions.
He was on the run from police three times last year and is known for changing his appearance to evade authorities.
Forden became the first person to escape the new $218 million Mt Eden Corrections Facility in October last year and last month was one of two prisoners who barricaded themselves in a tower at Auckland's Paremoremo Prison for 50 hours in a "peaceful protest" against prison conditions.
