An armed robbery at a bank in Avondale has been thwarted after a customer and security guard gave chase to the offender.

A police spokesman said the incident occurred at the ASB bank in Avondale at 10.37am today.

The offender, a young man, covered his face with a bandana or scarf before confronting a male customer with a large kitchen knife.

He was chased from the bank by the customer and a security guard and was last seen running down Wingate St in Avondale.

The spokesman said the ethnicity of the man was unknown. He was wearing a green hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans and was carrying a black bag and a large kitchen knife.
