Detectives seeking to solve the 1993 cold-case killing of Jane Furlong yesterday turned their attention to her former flat in South Auckland.

Officers and forensic experts spent yesterday sifting through dirt which they had dug up at the front of a property in Heretaunga Ave, Onehunga.

Although not visible from the roadside, the dig scene is near a parking bay in front of the Onehunga flat.

Officers had removed a tree and other shrubs. A pile of dirt was visible near the driveway and police and forensic staff were sifting the dirt in metal pans. Other material was bagged up and tagged "ESR" for further forensic investigation.

The dig is happening outside the flat that Furlong shared with her boyfriend, Danny Norsworthy, at the time of her disappearance.

Inquiry head Detective Inspector Mark Benefield said yesterday: "The operation is acting on some information that requires further investigation.

"The activity is taking place outside the same block of flats as Jane's old address."

Furlong, a part-time sex worker, was last seen by her boyfriend after he had dropped her off to work on Auckland's Karangahape Rd on May 28, 1993.

The 17-year-old's remains were found buried at Port Waikato this year. Police have stated that they believed more than one person was involved in her death.

Furlong's mother, Judith Furlong, said last month that she had a "very strong idea" about who killed her.
