Police are investigating an arson at a Hamilton petrol station this afternoon where a man pumped fuel onto the forecourt and put a flame to it.

The incident unfolded at the Z Energy station on Anglesea St opposite the courthouse about 1.45pm.

Z Energy communications advisor Sheena Thomas said a man, who wasn't a customer, grabbed one of the pumps and sqeezed out 10 litres of petrol and lit it.

Police were interviewing staff and reviewing CCTV footage this afternoon.

The offender is understood to have fled the scene.

When Hamilton Central fire fighters arrived the fire was already out.

Senior station officer Alban Osborne said staff did everything right and acted quickly to avert a potentially dangerous situation.

Ms Thomas said the workers were calm and collected.

"They're pretty fine about it and they see it as something they just had to deal with."

All Z Energy staff are trained for emergency situations such as robberies and fires.
