Police are investigating two separate assaults of women in Christchurch.

A 21-year-old woman was attacked by an unknown man on the corner of Fenchurch Street and Tuckers Road at about 6.20pm on Friday.

Detective Dion Murray said the woman was walking to her Casebrook home when she was grabbed by the man and wrestled to ground. She was able to break free, run home and phone police.

"The man is described as Maori, in his late teens or early twenties, about 183cm tall, fat build with acne scars on his cheeks. He rode off along Tuckers Road on a mountain style bicycle."

Anyone with information should call Murray  03) 374 1728.

In a separate attack, a 35-year-old woman was assaulted at her Burwood home, also on Friday night.

Detective Greg Beer said he wanted to hear from anyone in the Burwood Road, Lake Terrace Road area that may have seen any person or vehicles acting suspiciously between 5pm and 8pm.

Residents who had been victims of thefts or break-ins in this area over the past week, and had not already reported it to police, were asked to call  (03) 363 7400.
