A Hastings Mongrel Mob member has been found guilty of a violent assault on his partner and mother of is children, which caused her to lose an eye.

A jury in the Napier High Court took just under five hours to come to their verdict after a trial that began on Monday.

Sio Muliipu, 24, faced ten charges including assault, kidnap and causing grievous bodily harm to the woman, whose name is suppressed.

He pleaded guilty to one charge of assault at the start of the trial on Monday. Two of the remaining nine charges were dismissed on Wednesday. He was found guilty of six of the remaining charges.

The Crown claimed Muliipu, a patched gang member from the age of 15, assaulted the woman several times in November last year then kidnapped her from a house after she went to police to escape his assaults.

The Crown claimed the kidnap, on December 5, saw Muliipu drag the woman from the house by her hair and keep her in a room in her brother's house, where he threatened to kill her and inserted a knife into her head beneath her left eyebrow. She lost sight in the eye, which bled profusely and was removed in surgery last month.

The armed offenders squad rescued the woman on December 6.

Muliipu denied all remaining assault charges and claimed the eye injury, which an ophthalmologist described as "almost surgical in nature" must have been caused by one of six children's toys he threw at her.

Muliipu's brother Time, 26, was found not guilty of  being a party to kidnap.

Sio Muliipu will be sentenced on December 21.
