A car seen driving at high speed along an Auckland street crashed into a dairy shortly afterwards, police say.

A police traffic unit saw the car overtaking two other vehicles on the painted median of Pt Chevalier Rd around 9.10pm yesterday.

By the time the police officer  had done a U-turn he had lost sight of the speeding car, police said.

Further along the road the car was found crashed into the Point Superette on the corner of Pt Chevalier Rd and Raymond Rd.

"It appears the vehicle failed to negotiate a wide bend and mounted the footpath at high speed and crashed into the shop. The impact of the car dislodged a concrete pillar," police said.

The only person in the car was the woman driving it. She was taken to hospital with injuries.

The ambulance service said she was taken to hospital in critical condition.
