Taupo police investigating a sexual assault in the township want to talk to a male filmed by security cameras near a popular backpackers lodge at the time of the assault.

Detective Sergeant Tony Manunui said police were seeking the man to help in their inquiries after a 22-year-old woman fought off an attacker late last Thursday night at the rear of the Urban Retreat Backpackers on Heu Heu St.

Manunui said the woman was walking down a service lane near Heu Heu Street around 10.45pm when she was grabbed and thrown to the ground by the attacker.

The woman struggled with the attacker before fighting him off and screamed for help.

The attacker ran off towards Titiraupenga Street, Manunui said.

Police have looked at CCTV tapes from the area and now want to talk to the man in the footage, he said.

Police also want to talk to anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in the area at the time of the alleged incident, or anyone who may recognise the man.

Anyone with any information should contact  Taupo police on (07) 378 6060 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
