Police are investigating an armed robbery at an Irish pub in Tauranga, SunLive have reported.

Officers have attended the scene at the McSwiggans Irish Pub on Cambridge Road, speaking with witnesses to the incident at 12.30pm Tuesday.

Bay of Plenty Police communications manager Kim Perks said police are currently looking for one offender in relation to the matter.

People were advised to stay clear of the pub as police begun a hunt for one offender.

Police are looking for a solidly built male wearing dark clothing seen running from the Cambridge Heights Shopping Centre.

An amount of money was stolen, but police will not say how much.

People with information about the robbery, and haven't spoken to police, can report information to Tauranga Police on 07 577 4300.

Earlier, reports had emerged of a number of police officers present on Cambridge Road, near the Cambridge Heights shops.

Several police units could be seen in the area near McSwiggans Irish Pub, and a SunLive reader reported that police were looking for someone following an aggravated robbery.

People were advised to stay away from the area until police ascertain what had happened.
