A woman who faked a pregnancy for nine months has admitted abducting a newborn from Middlemore Hospital in Auckland.

Neha Narayan, 25, appeared before Justice Peter Woodhouse in the High Court at Auckland this morning where she pleaded guilty to kidnapping the two-day-old infant.

Her lawyer, Ron Mansfield, confirmed the guilty plea and said Narayan was "getting assistance" but would not comment further.

Narayan faked a pregnancy for nine months before telling her partner she was overdue and asked to be taken to hospital on January 4.

She was charged with abduction after she took an Indian baby from the maternity ward and carried it to a waiting car in the hospital car park.

She was stopped when the girl's parents saw her and alerted hospital staff.

Her lawyer at the time, Heeni Phillips, said Narayan had not planned to abduct the child but had carried it to the carpark so she could speak with her partner.

Narayan was asked to surrender her passport when she appeared in the Manukau District Court last Thursday.

Phillips said in January that Narayan was an unemployed woman who was suffering as a result of a traumatic experience and that healthcare would be sought for her.

Narayan has been remanded on bail until sentencing on October 26.
