A 33-year-old Hastings man has been charged with assault in relation to an incident that saw a man stabbed in the head in Hastings early this morning.

Detective senior sergeant Dave de Lange said police were called to a Nelson Street address at 1.20am this morning.

They found a man with head injuries consistent with being stabbed.

Police spoke to a group of people and arrested a 33-year-old man for common assault.

The victim was treated at Hawke's Bay Hospital before being discharged this morning.

"We are undertaking a scene examination and interviewing the victim and witnesses," de Lange said.
