Woman flown to Tauranga Hospital after assault on Rangiwaea Island
A woman has been flown to hospital after an attack on an island in Bay of Plenty left her with serious shoulder injuries overnight.
Emergency services were called to Rangiwaea Island, northwest of Tauranga, about 9.30pm on Sunday after the 38-year-old local woman was assaulted.
Due to access difficulties and the need to get the woman to hospital quickly, the Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter was sent to the island, and flew the woman back to Tauranga Hospital.
Police said her injuries were not life-threatening.
They had not yet made an arrests, and were still working to identify the alleged offender, police northern communications Inspector Peter Raynes said.
Rangiwaea Island has just a small number of residents: the 2013 census put the combined population of Rangiwaea and neighbouring Matakana Island at 255.
