The driver of a stolen SUV led police on a 150kmh car chase before ramming a patrol car and escaping.

Inspector Marty Parker of central communications said police saw the four-wheel-drive, which had been reported stolen, driving north on State Highway One near the Tinakori offramp in Wellington at 11.30pm last night.

Police chased the car to the top of Ngauranga Gorge, reaching speeds up to 150kmh.

At the top of the gorge, near Johnsonville, the SUV rammed the police car, disabling it.

The driver of the SUV escaped towards Newlands.

Police found the SUV in Sheridan Tce, Johnsonville shortly after.

Inquiries were continuing this morning to find the driver.
