A 27-year-old man remains in an induced coma after an assault in Wainuiomata - 22km northeast of Wellington - early yesterday.

Four men were involved in a fight outside the Caltex service station in The Strand just after midnight, police said.

One was left with serious injuries and was taken to Wellington Hospital in a critical condition.

Two men left the scene of the fight at high speed in a blue car.

Police said this morning two Lower Hutt men were arrested last night and charged with assault. Nobody else was being sought by police.
