The public's view

A 12-year-old girl was grabbed and thrown to the ground by a man in a South Auckland alleyway.

The intermediate school student was walking through Mangere town centre on her way to meet a friend, about 7am on Thursday, when she was attacked.

She walked into an alleyway on Wayne Dr when the man, who she described as a Maori or Pacific Islander in his 20s, approached her.

He grabbed the girl, threw her to the floor and put his arms around her neck before a vehicle drove past and disturbed him.

The girl broke away and ran home where she told her family about the attack.

Police have interviewed the victim and residents who live near the alleyway. A scene examination was completed at the end of last week.

The man was described as about 180cm tall, of fat build, wearing a dark blue beanie.

The attack happened less than 1km from a walkway in Mangere where two girls - one just eight years old - were raped.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Counties Manukau police.
