A man is in hospital following a machete attack in Auckland last night, police say.

Police said the man was assaulted in Mt Albert around midnight, and was left with serious cuts to his shoulder and back.

The offender was not at the scene when police arrived.

The victim, whose age is unknown, was taken to Auckland hospital in a serious condition.

A witness said there was a lot of blood at the scene.

Detectives at the Avondale CIB were investigating.
