A woman was threatened with a spanner and forced into a public toilet where she was sexually assaulted, police say.

The 17-year-old was walking along Maadi Rd in Onekawa, Napier about midnight on Saturday when she was approached by a man.

She was found by a member of the public in a distressed state after the attack. She did not require hospital treatment.

The spanner was found at the scene and was being forensically examined by police.

Her attacker was described as a Maori man aged about 18, with long dark hair. He was wearing jeans and a blue checked top.

Detective John McGregor said police were keen to speak to anyone who was in the Maadi Rd area about midnight on Saturday and who may have seen the incident or the offender.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact McGregor at the Napier police station on 06-831 0700.
