Two Pukekohe butchery assistants were punched to the ground when attempting to stop a woman who repeatedly tried to steal meat.

A police spokeswoman said a woman stole a slab of sirloin steak from a wholesale butchery on Seddon Lane about 1.20pm on Friday.

When she returned a short time later staff detained her until her boyfriend arrived and helped her flee the store, the spokeswoman said.

Two butchery assistants tried to stop the pair from leaving but were "punched to the ground".

One suffered a cut lip and a cut to the back of his head, the other cut his neck.

The meat thief and her boyfriend were seen leaving the store in a vehicle with the registration ZY7799.

Police have conducted a scene examination at the butchery and have interviewed the staff involved.

Anyone with information about the incident, those involved, or the car are asked to contact police.
