A Rotorua man has been jailed for at least 12 years for murdering an elderly tourist in a city park.

In the High Court at Rotorua today Justice Peters sentenced Rawiri Samuels, 22, to life imprisonment with a minimum non-parole period of 12 years for the murder of Roman Skore, 64, of Niue Island.

Samuels was with a group of four men who brutally beat Mr Skorek unconscious in Kuirau Park last January and then returned later with the intention of killing him because they believed he would remember their names.

Justice Peters called it a brutal attack on a vulnerable man.

Three other men have pleaded not guilty to murder and will stand trial early next year.
