Man admits incest with murder accused
The father of a woman accused of killing her newborn baby has admitted having sex with her.
The 58-year-old man plead guilty to a charge of committing incest with his daughter when he appeared in Lower Hutt District Court today. The offending allegedly happened in June this year, court documents show.
The 21-year-old daughter is accused of murdering her newborn baby on September 8. The dead infant, thought to be less than a day old, was found at the back of a property in Taita on September 10, wrapped in a towel.
The woman was charged with killing the baby on September 18 - five days after her father was charged with incest.
She remains in psychiatric care.
Police have received DNA results confirming the identity of the baby's father, however, they have not revealed the results.
Prosecutor Sergeant John Miller said police needed to interview the woman again about the allegations involving her father to see whether more serious charges could be laid.
Her lawyer would not allow that to happen until she was released from psychiatric care and assessed by a doctor, Miller said.
Inspector Shane Cotter, head of the investigation into the baby's death, was not immediately available for comment.
Judge Jill Moss suppressed the man's name and any details that might identify the woman and remanded him on bail to appear for sentencing at Wellington District Court next month.
