Neighbours of a 23-year-old woman found dead in a sleepout behind her Auckland home are shocked, saying she was from a "lovely family".

Family members found the woman at 7.30am today. The last time they had seen her alive was at 8.30pm yesterday.

Police are treating the death as suspicious and Detective Inspector Mark Gutry said the victim suffered "unexplained injuries".

It is understood she lived at the house with her parents and older brother and had another older brother who had moved out.

Neighbours, who did not want to be named, said they were a lovely family and the only "unsavoury" person they had met had been the woman's boyfriend.

A woman who went to school with the victim said she was a quiet person.

The victim's family were seen talking to police this morning before leaving to give statements.

Stewart and Valerie Wade, who have lived on Cotton Place in Papakural for at least 30 years, said their neighbours were a hard-working family who had been living there for many years and had done a lot of home improvements during that time.

Stewart said it was a quiet street and the worst thing that had happened was a couple of recent burglaries.

Hearing someone had died next door was a sobering thought, he said.

"You just don't think like that."

An autopsy will take place this afternoon.
