Police are hunting an offender after a man was stabbed in the Auckland suburb of Birkenhead tonight.

The police Eagle helicopter and a number of other teams are in the area, where a man was left badly hurt at an address in Palmerston Rd following the attack.

Inspector Ian Brooker from the police northern communications said it was possible the offender had used a knife.

Police were still processing the scene of the incident and searching for the offender, Brooker said.

The man, whose age, was unknown, was taken to Auckland hospital with stab wounds in a "serious" condition, ambulance spokesman Norman Ngatai said.

An Auckland hospital spokesman said the man was in a critical condition and would be in intensive care
following surgery tonight.

Witnesses said the helicopter had been circling for what felt like "hours". There were at least four police cars and a dog handler in the street, which was described as "posh".

Neighbours said the area was "quiet" and "nice" with families living there.
