A man was remanded in custody at the Blenheim District Court today after being arrested for robbery and assault in Picton in the early hours of the morning.

Sergeant Kris Payne of the Picton police said the Mongrel Mob prospect in his late 20s  indecently assaulted a 19-year-old woman on Waikawa Rd near the Picton Marina entrance, about 2.30 this morning.

He grabbed the woman, pushed her up against a van and made several sexual comments.  She managed to push him off and walked away, calling a friend as she did so.

The assault "has shaken the young woman's world," Mr Payne said.  Family, friends and Victim Support were helping her cope with what had been a very frightening experience.

Minutes earlier the man stole a necklace from a 22-year-old man walking down Waikawa Rd.  The robbery and assault victims had been walking with a large group but became separated, Payne said.

People later said from about 8pm they had seen the man about Picton, intoxicated and yelling gang slang. Well known to the police, he had been drinking at home and his gang associates' place.

"If the public see a person acting in a disorderly fashion they should give us a call because this could stop something like this happening," Payne said. "If you are out at night walk in groups or better still call a taxi or a friend."

The man was to be remanded to prison in Christchurch until a bail application on January 7, Payne said.
