Hutt Valley police have launched an investigation after a young woman was sexually assaulted in her Wainuiomata home early this morning.

An unknown man is understood to have entered the Wainuiomata Rd address, where the woman was home alone, some time between 4am and 5.15am.

He woke the woman up and sexually assaulted her, before leaving the house.

He is then thought to have carried on along Wainuiomata Rd.

Police hope the thorough forensic investigation of the scene carried out today will help them to identify the attacker.

They have not ruled out the possibility that the man is local.

Hutt Valley police are calling for anyone who observed suspicious people or vehicles around the Wainuiomata Rd and Reading St areas early this morning to come forward.
