Police are warning people in the Victory area of Nelson, particularly women living alone, to be vigilant about security after a 62 year-old woman was sexually violated by an unknown man.

Detective Mark Kaveney of Nelson said this evening the woman was badly injured in the attack around 2.30pm at a Victory address..

She was currently being treated in Nelson Hospital, but her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Mr Kaveney said police were investigating, but were yet to speak fully with the victim.

"It's very concerning the person was unknown to her. People living in the Victory area should be aware of what's happened and need to be vigilant, especially women living alone."

Mr Kaveney said more details would be made available once a scene examination had been done and the victim had been spoken with.
