Police have arrested a man for a sexual attack in Wainuiomata on Boxing Day.

Hutt Valley police arrested and charged a 49-year-old from the area for assaulting a young woman.

The man, of Pacific Island descent, was also charged with burglary to the woman's address.

He was understood to have entered the Wainuiomata Rd house, where the woman was alone, some time between 4am and 5.15am on December 26.

He woke the woman and sexually assaulted her before leaving the house.

He is then thought to have carried on along Wainuiomata Rd.

Police thanked Wainuiomata community members who gave information and assisted the investigation.
