A motorcyclist allegedly reached speeds of up to 140kmh in a 50kmh zone while fleeing from police in Porirua, north of Wellington, this morning.

Police gave chase, but were forced to abandon the pursuit three times because of the motorcyclist's high speed and dangerous driving.

They are now searching for the motorcyclist in Wainuiomata.

Senior Sergeant Steve Harwood said the motorcyclist fled police after he or she was signalled to stop near Porirua.

Police were forced to abandon the chase on State Highway 58 because of the excessive speeds the motorcyclist reached.

Two more attempts to stop the rider in Lower Hutt were also abandoned and the motorcyclist was last seen entering Wainuiomata. The motorcyclist reached speeds up to 140kmh in a 50kmh area, Harwood said.

"[This motorcyclist poses] a huge risk to members of the public."

Staff have cordons in place in Wainuiomata as they search for the man.
