A Lower Hutt woman seen dancing while driving her car down State Highway 2 has been apprehended by the police after a 25-minute slow-speed chase.

Senior Sergeant Steve Harwood said members of the public noticed the woman erratically driving a Mazda convertible northbound through Upper Hutt at about 5.20pm.

"The person was dancing inside her vehicle and had very limited control. She had no hands on the wheel," he said.

Police started pursuing the car, which was travelling 20km under the speed limit, and attempted to convince the woman to pull over.

When that was unsuccessful, police laid out road spikes in a bid to stop her.

However, even after her two left tyres were spiked, the woman continued to drive slowly and erratically down the motorway, ignoring police warnings.

Bus driver Jeremy Shannon saw the woman driving south on Fergusson Dr, Silverstream, followed by four police cars and a dog van.

"She was just mumbling and singing away to herself in the car."

The 48-year-old woman eventually turned around, and after 25 minutes she pulled over and was apprehended by police. She is currently at Upper Hutt police station.

Sergeant Harwood said the woman is understood to have mental health issues and appeared distressed.

He thanked members of the public for helping avoid what could have been a dangerous situation.
