Armed police are hunting for an alleged drug dealer who could be carrying a gun in central Wellington.

Inspector Terry van Dillen said police, including the armed offenders squad, were looking for the man after his car was found on Taranaki St this evening.

The man - a suspected drug dealer - ''wasn't a threat to the public'' but could be carrying a gun for self-protection, Mr van Dillen said.

''We're treating it as reasonably serious until we can locate [him].''
