Two Wellington men charged with importing methamphetamine were arrested after a package containing the drug was found hidden at Auckland Airport.

The men, aged 54 and 36, were tracked for months after they were initially detained by Customs on suspicion of importing drugs and then freed.

The package containing 200 grams of methamphetamine was discovered concealed at Auckland Airport in November, and the pair were arrested at the weekend after forensic evidence tied them to the drugs, Detective Senior Sergeant Warwick McKee said.

They have been remanded in custody to reappear in Wellington District Court on smuggling charges next week.

"This is a significant seizure and will put a dent in this drug syndicate," Mr McKee said.

"The clear message is that we know who these people are and we'll be relentless in preventing the harm this drug causes to our communities."

Customs said last night that it was inappropriate to answer questions about the case while it was before the courts.

The operation was not linked to the seizure of a large amount of MDMA, the pure form of ecstasy, in Wellington and Auckland last month, Mr McKee said.

Police investigations were continuing to try to identify other people involved in the syndicate importing the ecstasy.
