A high-speed chase involving a stolen vehicle ended this morning when the driver crashed on Auckland's southern motorway.

Police on a routine patrol in Auckland city at 8am saw a vehicle with a smashed back windscreen and when they signalled for the driver to stop the car took off, leading them on a four-minute pursuit.

Inspector Andy Brill said the chase reached speeds of 150 km/h but for most of the time the fleeing offender was restricted by long-weekend traffic.

"Where he could put his foot down, he did," Brill said.

The pursuit ended when the man crashed into the median barrier near Greenlane.

He was arrested and police investigations revealed the car was stolen.
