Police have charged the man labelled "the Port Hills groper" with 10 counts of indecent assault.

The man had allegedly been targeting women exercising alone in the Port Hills. Several women said they had been grabbed, groped and licked by the man.

Detective Constable Fiona Croft confirmed police had laid 10 charges of indecent assault against a 63-year old Christchurch man at a first court appearance.

The man was remanded on bail and is to reappear in the Christchurch District Court on Monday, February 11.

His name is suppressed.

The majority of the alleged offences took place between August last year and earlier this month, but one complaint was from 2010.

The incidents mostly occurred in the vicinity of the Rapaki and Mt Vernon tracks, as well as in St Martins.

Croft said police were continuing to talk to a number of complainants, and further charges were possible.
