An Auckland barrister has been banned from driving for six months after pleading guilty to drink driving.

Fijian-born Satendra Prakesh Singh, 60, was also ordered to pay $1050 in fines, court costs and medical expenses after appearing in the Auckland District Court today.

Police withdrew a charge of careless driving.

Singh - who had pleaded not guilty to the drink driving charge earlier this month - was stopped by police on Church St, Onehunga, on July 7.

The court heard that Singh crossed the centre line and collided with an oncoming vehicle, causing the driver to lose control.

He then hit a second vehicle and continued driving on the wrong side of the road.

When tested, Singh returned a reading of 144mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood - nearly twice the legal limit.

Police said he was unable to say why he lost control of his vehicle, despite the court hearing he had been drinking that afternoon.

Singh denied that claim.

"That is not correct, on that day I only had one beer," he told the court.

Singh explained his high alcohol reading was as a result of "the night before".

He also made an unsuccessful application for name suppression, claiming that he had been "unfairly targeted by the media".
