A 17-year-old woman was followed and indecently assaulted by a young man on a BMX bike in Napier yesterday morning.

Police say a young Maori man, about 15, followed the woman walking through the suburb of Pirimai about 11.30am.

He rode after her as she walked down Allen Berry Ave, through an alley way and on to Woodhouse Pl, where he indecently assaulted her.

She managed to push him away and walked into a nearby house to ring her family, who then notified police.

The young man rode off in the direction he came from.

Detective sergeant Emmet Lynch said the young woman was obviously shaken by the event.

Police are interviewing her and wanted to hear from people who may have seen the incident.

The young man was wearing a black singlet with a distinctive red, yellow and green band around the neck along with black knee-length shorts.

He is described as having a slight build, young sounding voice and is about 170-175 cm tall.

Anyone with information should ring the Napier Police (06) 831 0700 or Crimestoppers anonymous 0800 phone line - 0800 555 111.
